Vintage Crush: Straw Bowler 70′s Hat

21 Jun

It’s the first day of summer  and it raining here in Baltimore. It’s the perfect season and day for a hat! If hats had a zodiac sign it would be Gemini. It doubles as a fashionable lazy hair day shield and sun blocker. It never goes out of season (ie winter hats ) and comes in so many styles to fit any personality.

On a recent vintage hunt, I spotted this amazing bowler style  straw hat with a earthtone mix of modern colors. Perfect with jeans for a boho look or a nice summer dress as pictured. For more details, head to my store.

Fame Junk Tour Presents: Monica “The Tutu Tailor”

21 Jun

Its my belief that every girl went through a ballerina phase. The puffed-out pink tutus. The über neat bun. The matching pink slippers dancing around pearly white tights. To me, ballerinas were princesses that could dance really well and wore their tiaras around their waist. And the latest Fame Junk Tour artist makes a living turning little girl’s into posh modern tutu princesses. Check out her story…

How did you get started making tutus ?

The day before I turned sixteen, I went to interview for a sales position at Baby Gap.  As a teen, kids were like dolls to me.  I had an affinity for cute children and playing dress up.  That day I went for my interview was my lucky day! I was hired!

After being employed there for almost 6 years I had my mind made up that whatever endeavor I pursued would involve children.  One day, sitting down, I just said hey…tutus are cute they are the epitome of the brand I want to create.  They are fun, have multiple uses…formal, informal, and play! BRILLANT! Then, one day, I posted a picture of a tutu I made for a friend on Facebook and the story starts from there.

What has been the most unique or strangest tutu you have designed?

That’s a tough question since every tutu I create is unique.  However, I think, creatively, my favorite tutu to date has to be one I designed for an Alice and Wonderland theme.  I got really funky with it and decided to combine the Alice and Queen of Hearts character of the story.  The tutu was a beautiful shade Heaven Blue and a bold shade red with felt heart adornments…simply posh!

What song or quote motivates you?

“I will not take no for an answer, I burn with jealous love for you oh Zion. I will not let another have you” –from A Lament over Israel.  This is how I feel about my success and
happiness.  I will have it and no one will keep me from it.

List the top 3 fashion rules you live by?

(1) I never plan a tutu ensemble. (I start with a theme and then I explore.)

(2) Quality beats Quantity!

(3) Color is god’s gift. Use it!

The best advice I can give is NEVER sacrifice your brand image for ANYTHING. The fashion business is like show business, your image is everything.

Any upcoming projects or ventures?

Currently I’m working on building my brand.  So, I’m trying to slow things down a bit.  I’m working on promoting my business and traveling to appear at events & markets as a Vendor.  In the near future, I’ll be appearing at the Rayn Fall Dance Studio Recital on June 18th and EZ Rentals opening Summer Bash in Woodlawn, MD on June 25th.
